Could be that Oryx' son Crota was given power and made his minions in his own form, where Oryx is a darker darkness that has no form of his own and simply infects/brainwashes any species he encounters. Maybe the hive are just another species that Oryx has overtaken but they are more infected by raw darkness.
Speculation and uneducated guesses, I'm no lore master and have not read all the grimoire cards.
