The Impreza one does function as a heater mainly because I think the "cooler" itself isn't big enough to cool shit.
EDIT: Just thought about it. With a heat exchanger that cools using coolant, like the @
robispec solution, doesn't the unit have its OWN coolant loop, separate from the engine coolant loop? That would solve the problem you brought up. Add thermostat to the loop and it's even better!
