They were pressed for time and money, so they are all over the place. Minor story tweaks, cutting characters out, and the timeline is out of whack. They weren't even sure if they would have had the show picked up for multiple seasons while filming the first, but no fear. They are signed on to the completion of the story (7 seasons announced), and George R.R. Martin didn't want to pull a Robert Jordan and die before it was finished, so he told the producers what his final end game was. I think that's why they killed off Rob's wife.

And some of these people are going apeshit over the author. I think its overreaction and possibly just an expression of anger but seriously. Its how the book one. Not everything will end with bunnies and butterflies. lol
