I like smallerish wheels especially for drifting

I am leaning towards just going with a 17x9 wheel and using the stock tires. I left the Japanese car scene for about 6 years or so. As I am getting back into it with my FRS I have started looking around after different wheel options and since I am a huge drifting fan, hence my handle, having smaller diameter wheels with thinner tires should make it a much easier car to drift until I boost it.
Anyone else into drifting follow my train of thought on this?
With my sr swapped s14 240 I was only running 15 inch rims with about 230 hp give or take with the red top and what minor mods I had.
Seemed to work fine then so wondering why everyone goes to 18 inch rims nowadays. Maybe I am a little more old school.
