Why wouldn't you want to car to remember the highest gear and automatically upshift for you? Simple: how would it know at what rpm to upshift each gear from 1st to 2nd to whatever gear you were in when you stopped? If I wanted to car to automatically upshift, I would have it in auto mode. The whole point of manual mode is so I can (if I wanted) throttle it to redline before upshifting to a higher gear and increase access to torque and horsepower.

I never knew that. I had thought you would need to downshift as well as upshift under manual mode. Good to know. Thanks.

The number 3 remains on the digital gear indicator. 3. Accelerate. The AT will upshift from one to three. IOW, it remembered the highest gear you manually selected. You could also select a gear while stopped (fourth, for example) and it would upshift to fourth and stop there. Can you get the FR-S to do this? Why would you want to? Why not?
I use my ears for for that.
