Sure anybody can drive MT and I haven't said otherwise. But for myself, coming from extended driving in AT, MT is a much more involved process. Like EK_Golfer mentioned in his post above, MT requires commitment and when you do commit, it rewards you with satisfaction and a sense of achievement.
As for the long trip anecdote, I shifted to 4th quite a few times for some aggressive passing on the highway. Sometimes I'd put it into 5th for steeper inclines. If I was driving AT, I'd just modulate the throttle *yawn*. Besides, Great Ocean Rd is very twisty - gave me plenty of time to practice heel-toe and experiment with traction loss
