I'd also consider a Mazda3 hatch. My fiancé has a '13 Mazda3 Skyactiv sedan and loves it. You should be able to get a brand new one for under $20K. They're surprisingly fun to drive for a FWD car, have a great 6sp AT transmission. More torque than an 86, great mileage, etc...
