Not to mention the port injectors are cheaper and easier to replace.

i would say it will depend on what tuners find once they can get into the fuel mapping logic as far as the split between DI duty and port injectors.

At that point though, it'd be easier to retrofit an older engine.

i can totally imagine tuners working for people wanting big boost and hp going this route
but swapping in an EJ engine will not be a simple matter, certainly not nearly to the extent that it is on past subarus (which came with EJs from teh factory). the newer FB/FA series use different engine mounting and bellhousing bolt patterns.

There is a huge reason why the 2.0T Gen Coupe didn't get DI unlike the 3.8, but still got an increase up to 274hp. Engine Tuning.

exactly, although i doubt they would have opted for DI on the 3.8 if it were to impose a limit on them from a tuning standpoint, even with the benefit of reduced emissions and low load fuel consumption. but as you suggested, although big gains have been seen in the DI FI engines, tuners will tell you its a total pain in the ass (from talking to COBB folks regarding tuning a mazdaspeed3 to some 350lbft, 300+hp).
do any of the direct injection engines out there now also have manifold/port injector systems?
also i believe this is on topic
