This. You also have those on the edge of your door so you don't leave your paint on another person's car if you happen to hit them in a parking lot, and the top side of the rear bumper to avoid scratching the paint by loading/unloading things in/out your trunk. If you're clever enough, you can make it a habit to close your doors by pushing the door by their edges, and your trunk by pushing on the license plate. That way you can handle all your car's doors without scratching the paint.
