On a car that is designed to run on premium, and that specifies its exclusive use, using low-octane is foolish. You are forcing the engine to de-tune itself and run less efficiently. In addition, not all "pinging", as opposed to "detonation" is audible, so you are likely causing damage to your engine before it can respond to the problem.
