I've found that suddenly becoming ill is a decent excuse. People get the 24 hour flu all the time.
I can't use this excuse anymore, working for the government has it's downsides, but you can! So live a little, call in sick, and then enjoy a day of revelry and BBQ with a huge host of like minded people. If you show up, the first beer is on me (provided you drink, and don't mind Newcastle).
