I've read about gear skipping (sorry can't remember the source), and it's actually more complex than just using rev-matching to compensate - even when you rev match is you are skipping gears you are still putting extra strain on the synchros. I saw the mechanical driveline diagrams that explained the reasons for this at the time, they were very clear, but couldn't recall the technical explanation now.

The takeaway was - if you want to skip a gear, it can be done without straining the synchros but only if you go through all the intervening gears while the clutch is kept in as this 'steps down' the speed differences the sychros have to deal with. So:

clutch in
2 -> 3
3-> 4
clutch out
