I don't think you can call it fake, anymore than you can call the bell (flanged part) of a tuba fake. The tube simply transmits the sound of the engine to the firewall. It is just a "dumb" tube, it doesn't generate any sound other than that of the engine.
If you are going to call the sound tube fake, than you also have to consider the sound generated by the exhaust pipe to be "fake" as well. After all, these are responsible for tuning the sound of the engine's exhaust gases. The "natural" sound of the exhaust gas leaving the manifold is entirely different.
