I used to run my mirrors so I could see the rear of my car in them, until my friend actually told me how to set them up. Haven't had a blind spot since.

She told me to basically lean my head into the window, then adjust the driver's mirror from there to where you can see the edge of the rear of your car, and the same for the passenger, just lean as far as you can.

You shouldn't see the same car in your rear view mirror, as you do in your side views, that's just counter productive.
