You can make the 50mm work...I've shot a few things at around 50mm or less and they have some pretty good results. This one was shot at 40mm on my old D300:



If you keep the camera on continuous focus, you shouldn't have any problems with the focus speed. As for blowing out everything, you definitely need to use a neutral density filter if you're going to shoot at slower shutter speeds. I used B+W 8x ND filter for the two drifting shots I originally posted.
