I think that Ninja 300 would be a great starter. I rode a friend's several months ago. You may even consider one of the new 500cc Honda parallel twin models. Would be just fine to start on, and you would want to hold on to it longer then the 300.

My 2012 CBR1000RR with a few little upgrades.

How it looks now with the dealer optional rear seat eliminator and Antorini quick shifter installed.
