If you are not careful and do not double check the bit you grab from the drawer at H.D. you will sometimes get the incorrect size thanks to folk who throw their extras into whatever slot. So I would first check if you actually got the 7/8. Next I found that you need to seat the plug correctly in the sound pipe, if you do not the noise reduction is pretty much null/void. At first I thought I had it seated correctly, but a second attempt proved me wrong as it was flush with the carpet instead of being backed out a bit.
If all else fails, I can hand deliver my spare
