Yes, your car goes into fuel cut and uses its own momentum to keep the engine spinning basically.
Look at your fuel usage gauge next time. Let off (above ~1400 rpm) and it'll go right down to 0 L/100km, whereas if you shift to neutral, you're still burning fuel to keep the engine idling.
