Sound deadening material is surprisingly heavy. I know some special Subaru models of the STI (the Type-RA I believe) had no or little sound deadening material in order to save weight.
I was going to do it on my Impreza whenever I got around to changing the carpet, but now that its got a salvage title I don't think I'll ever bother with it.
