we-e-ell.... I had a look at that site, it doesn't really have that many in a direct comparison. The one there is between a regular MX-5 and an MX-5 Sport - I don't know the exact model differences, but chances are the Sport will have some improvement to make it faster than the regular model.
I really don't think the twins are special in being that much slower for auto vs manual - no-one doubts that manuals are quicker over these kinds of tests, but I don't think the transmission being used here is especially at fault.
