To the OP, if you want to stay engaged, do what the fiancé wants. If you want more fun, just test drive one. You won't want to stay in your Golf any longer, no matter the MPG's.

This is all a matter of opinion. VW finds its balance with build quality and aim at all age groups at an affordable price. Introductory class Japanese cars tend to have crap interiors but tend to have far better reliability, mpg, and longevity with it owners. The Golf is actually a very iconic Euro ride, probably even ahead of the 3 series, as the GTI model is known worldwide as being an excellent DD for all age groups and lifestyles. Its been that way for like 30 years now. Noone knows how the FR-S will fair in 10 years. The Golf/GTI will live forever though.
