To be honest, if Toyota/Subaru hadn't done such a good job at the auto, the manual may have been more attractive to me.
Coming out of a Corolla auto, you realize how good an auto can be. The auto does as its told in the FR-S and has a pretty good brain on its own. In the Corolla, you shifted into ranges (s1-s5) and then based on throttle input, it would choose the gear appropriately (ie. s1 = 1st gear, s2 = 1st or 2nd, s3 = 1st, 2nd, or 3rd,....). I developed a style to force it to behave as a true semi-auto should, but, it never really felt right. Also the shifts in the Corolla were relatively slow compared to the FR-S. You had to anticipate the lag time as to when you actually did your shifting. Had the auto been similar to the Corolla, I would force myself to learn stick.
Also, if a car came with a CVT, I would force myself to learn stick. I haven't found a CVT that I have liked yet.
Having the auto allows me an added bonus to my situation. It allows my wife to drive if I have had a few too many wobbly pops. She has zero interest in learning to drive stick.
