Make sure you snap a picture of the fuel pump assembly when they pull that out. I was thinking about all the possibilities and because you said that it did not feel right from the get go. I'm starting to think that the pump was installed incorrectly and bled off pressure in wot.

There is a in tank pressure valve that might of came loose or the o-ring never fully seated.
