In all likelihood, the man will be charged with manslaughter. While I don't feel especially bad for the car thief, he was not presenting an "immediate threat of bodily harm or injury" to the car's owner and therefore, self-defense would be a tough sell in court. While there are some states that allow for the use of deadly force in the protection of property, Washington State is not one of them.
As a CCP holder, I make sure to familiarize myself with all deadly force laws in whichever state that I bring my weapon. (Especially Georgia!) I would recommend any of you that are talking "big" about killing a car thief do the same. You may end up being the one behind bars.
