I ran across this little gem of a wheel weighing only 16.3lbs and only cost $173!!! Motegi Racing MR125 http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...ed&showRear=no
I wanted to go with an 18 wheel but to get down below 20 lbs I am going to spend $250+ per wheel.
As for tires I am looking for a great performer but something that can also be a daily driver and not wear out in 10,000 miles.
My current selection is Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position which run about $154 each: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....cleSearch=true
Only downside to this setup is the lack of width I guess. Its not a 8 or 9 inch width which could give up some grip.
What do you think?

If staying with 215/45-17 I'd get a Mich Pilot Super Sport - that will be fine on your rim, grip WAY more and still be light. It's wider than a normal 215.
Only reason to go 8 or 9 inches is if you are thinking about a 235 or 245 or bigger tire. More grip for racing but less mpg, heavier steering, etc for normal driving. 225 series on a 17 doesn't really fit our cars IMO.
