It's usually not just the structural strength nearly as much as the propensity for detonation. From my understanding that is, detonation is far more dangerous and damaging than incrementally higher cylinder pressures. Eg. If you take a high compression engine and run race grade fuel you can usually run more boost safer unless there is a significant weak point.

I'm not trying to come across like I know what I am talking about so please excuse my inexperience.
