They're more of a sandwich of plastic materials with a rubberized texture. You will feel that brand new mats appear to be slightly more slippery than ordinary rubber mats, but you will quickly get used to them. The initial slipperiness WILL go away as you use the mats - wearing in the surface will take most of that slipperiness away due to the slight abrasive action of dirt and your shoes.

After a few days of using the mats, you will probably end up using them year round, only taking them out every couple of months to clean them. 100% well worth every penny....
