OP, don't let the instructions or parts removed intimidate you. I've been a garage mechanic for 15 years now and you would be AMAZED at just how easily everything goes back together after you've pulled it apart. Take plenty of pictures and go slow the first time. Plugs don't need to be changed until 60k miles so there is plenty of time. Once my warranty is up on the car I will be doing everything on it. Do your research and take pictures and you won't have any issues.
I actually was one of the first people non-mechanics to pull apart the vanos system in an E46 M3 here in socal. I took LOTS of pics and talked to lots of people. I took my time and everything turned out great! I was even able to teach the local garage mechanic how to work on them and he has literally helped hundreds of people saving them thousands of dollars! Its pretty fun working on your own car. Don't let the amount of work intimidate you!
