If you saw these women up close and compared them to girls with "normal" makeup on you'd think they were slathered in the stuff. Despite what the makeup artist in the article said there is a vast difference between tv and stage make-up and what someone would do for an in person event. The "tricks" are still the same but the human eye is better at seeing contrast than a camera is, and due to the less harsh light shadow lines from wrinkles etc... aren't nearly as visible, not is the oily sheen we see often in "celebs without makeup" pics. Also freckles and other skin color variations aren't as noticable in person. Basically the camera is harsh, and makeup is needed to soften the image up, the human eye and brain do an amazing job of this on their own, and in real life not nearly as much makeup is needed, and quite often none is needed at all.
