I think the longest I've had the CEL off on my GTI was about 500 miles. I love the car anyway because it's extremely practical and pretty quick in its own right on decent tires, but it's not a cheap car to keep on the road :P
Not that its "unreliable" or whatever-- its never stranded me-- but having to pay a good ~$200/yr extra to make the CEL go out so it can take its emissions test is annoying.
