Owned an Audi A4 for 10 years. Then I owned a Cadillac CTS with the 3.2L Catera motor in it. Those will be the last German engineered cars that I own due to the expense of maintenance and difficulty of working on them.
For the record the CTS chassis is great but the 3.2L motor would be best used as a boat anchor. Also I have never seen a used Audi or VW that did not have an almost perpetual CEL displayed on the dash.
My advice would be to proceed with caution as far as the TTS goes. In addition to the engine issues stated above the front suspension is also rather fragile and you can easily drop a couple thousand replacing parts there once the car gets up in the 60K mile range.
For 40K I would buy a brand new Cadillac ATS with the 4 cylinder turbo and AWD. They are not sports cars but then neither is the TTS.
Good luck with your purchase no matter what you decide.
