This was actually it. Was about to take out the entire strut and realized the endlink was a bit loose.

No. If you don't trim it, you're just going to run into the stop sooner, effectively limiting travel. But there won't be any clunking in either case.

No. They are designed that way, so the spring remains in tension under suspension droop.

Get the car up in the air and wiggle around the strut, sway bars, and other moving parts of the suspension. My guess is that something is loose that should be snug and tight.
