That's not an exact quote but paraphrased from memory. That's a fairly common practice though on an expensive new platform though that (currently at least) is not destined to be used in other vehicles.

So an STI version hasn't been publically announced as a real car that will be for sale, but logically a faster/higher performance version (I'd hope for Hondas Type-R treatment, less weight, stiffer body, a slight bump in power, different suspension parts, etc over a 300hp turbo car though) would be a likely "specialty" type model of the car.

The base BRZ and FR-S I see as being identical engine wise, but that's solely based on repeated statements that only the bumpers, badges and interior bits would differ between the two cars.
It would be dumb to use the platform exclusively for only 2 cars. I think an interview with either Toyota or Subaru said, platform was made with convertible in mind. I suspect that the plateform will be used for convertible version and small Lexus coupe and convertible( IS Coupe and C? and probably other cars too).

You're right, STI is not announced, but it's probably in work. Since TRD version in Japan leaked on the web, I don't see why Subaru don't go to STI route. I still don't know how they put turbo without messing up with the weight distribution. They can do it, but how much does it cost to do so? We don't know.

Edit: Now we see STI concept, I think we will see the production STI soon.
