Am I worrying to much? having the cell phone tethered does allow charging and most people probably would plug their cell phones in while running the apps on the head unit so why not just connect by tethering?

I don't think you can tether it via USB. I wouldn't worry about wireless tether. The carrier won't notice unless you're downloading ridiculous amounts of data.
