I know what you were saying man but 80 microns IS in fact lower than recommended. Having <90 microns sucks because all the rock chips he's getting now will need to be buffed out one day and when they day comes with an 80 micron panel it calls for some seriously tender buffing with microfiber specific pads like megs stuff... Short and simple, it's a BITCH to correct paint on cars with sub 90 microns.

edit; but yes you are correct that as long as the clear coat stands its own, and you constantly have wax/sealant/opticoat on you're paint will be fine... nobody would ever know the difference. It' only comes in effect when detailers have to buff the clearcoat down to blend in blemishes.
