But since we now know that, in this "front-mid-engine" design, the engine on the FT-86 actually sits in the trunk of the car ahead of you, the tranny not might reach back far enough to go with anything other than a linkage set-up.

Based on the pics it looks like it's going to be connected via the shaft that's sitting there above the trans. That's how AZ6 trans are done, with a box mounted to the trans behind that and then connected to that shaft. The shifter would be bolted/held in with a snap ring/whatever to that "box" and the end of the shifter would connect to an extension going to that shaft. The shaft will then rotate and move forward and backwards to select the gears.
