From the pics, I agree. The transmission doesn't seem to extend back quite far enough to be direct. But since Toyota seems to see the Mazda MX-5 and RX-8 as targets/competitors, it's hard to imagine them going to linkage. In a car that is supposedly all about driving pleasure and feel, I'd bet they want to hook everything up as direct as possible.
I wonder a lot more about what kind of power steering this is going to have...
