Technically, we are required to pay these taxes to out of state vendors when we do our annual tax returns. However, I don't know anyone who volunteers this information to the IRS.
Vendors are required to tax customers in states they have a nexus in.
Yes, the US tax code is a cumbersome system. It begs to be simplified. We wouldn't need the IRS as it exists if it wasn't so complex.
