There are many things about fuel matching that relate to performance. Octane is only one, and unfortunately manufacturers have to design around the fuels readily available in the countries of sale(and this is Japanese info, not NA info). But if Mazda can do high compression with regular then Toyota may be able too as well! It does make sense that dual FI with direct injection will allow much more finely controlled injection relative to combustion cycle which may minimize some of the more traditional causes of knock. Obviously if there is more power to be had in a BRZ it has to be extracted somehow? Besides the numbers may only be quoted based on premium which does not preclude the ability to run on regular with different performance numbers.

We will have to wait and see how this plays out?
