This exact same thing happened to me and my BRZ ended up sitting at the dealer for about 3 weeks.
Turns out there was an electronic component malfunction that would not unlock the steering wheel. The vehicle will not start if the steering wheel is locked.
On the bright side, Subaru of America took good care of me and I feel much better about my first Subaru ownership experience.
