You don't want the engine to knock and switch timing, which will worsen your fuel economy. Theoretically you could run lower octane fuel, as long as you never exceed a certain throttle position, since that would lower the maximum temperature that the air/fuel mix sees. In fact if a car has variable intake duration instead of a throttle plate to control air mass flow, then the temperature of the air/fuel mix goes down very fast as you reduce the "throttle position", so low octane fuel is definitely not going to do anything.
