Or, ya know, they could... Because they've been saying all along that "MOAR PWR" isn't the goal of this car. So no, the STI model wouldn't
have to be turbocharged.

You're out of your mind. I drove a Yaris for a year, it's plenty fine for daily driving. People are just power hungry and spoiled now because power is more accessible. If you just want to go fast in a straight line, this isn't the car for you.
