I'm just guessing here, so don't flame me if i'm wrong, but i'd assume it requires premium because it's a performance orientated 4 cyclinder rather than an eco 4 cyclinder. It's like the Mustang GT. They have it tuned for regular or higher octane gasoline. However, there are rumors it will be moving to just the higher octane for higher HP values. It just depends how they have the car tuned from the factory.
