One reason European cars appear to be more expensive in the US, is that European car manufacturers don't offer the base model trims here. With the exception of VW, I can't think of any European cars that aren't considered 'luxury' here (maybe mini, but those aren't exactly cheap, either). In Europe, you can buy BMWs without leather and with 4 cyl engines. Can't really do that here.
There is also a lot to be said for differences in taxes, fees, certification testing, marketing costs, dealer networks, and importing costs.
