Yes, my recommendation is to build a cheapo-Linux box if this is something you want to pursue long-term. Spd is right with the recommendation of a VM though; I would do that first then plunker down the cash for a Linux box.
I'm not very familiar with Linux, but I've poked around Ubuntu many times. Definitely what you want as a newcomer. A Linux poweruser will call it bloated (which is kinda true), but it has the features you're looking for in an operating system WITH a friendly GUI.
