Do you mean, with the transmission in neutral? If so, that's a good question. There's an interlock that keeps the starter from engaging without the clutch depressed, so you have to depress it long enough to engage the starter.
I had hoped that that was enough; IOW, if the starter engages, you could then release the clutch. But it isn't - if you release the clutch before the engine catches, the starter disengages and you're out of luck.
FWIW this isn't unique to the BRZ; my Corvette works the same way. I understand the safety reasoning, but it's kind of a drag - in older cars I used to start without depressing the clutch (in neutral, of course), because the pressure plate preloads the rear main with an axial load - it's theoretically easier on the engine to start it with the clutch engaged.
I had a car with the interlock in the '90s that was set up such that I could stick my left toe up behind the clutch pedal and press the button that sensed clutch activation; I just trained myself to do that. But that's not possible (or at least practical) with the BRZ.
