That is also a good theory madfast. Iīve seen that in Golf GTI MkVīs too. It just seemed too bulky for a "sound improver", but it could be.

In the Mustang with Coyote engine, a friend of mine removed the filter/membrane that is held in that housing shown in the second pic, and now it has a really loud intake noise in the cabin, seems to be a pretty common modification.
