For the general crowd, the "stigma" about piggybacks all comes from poor programming. There were several third party tuning companies who jumped in with both feet using piggyback systems - including early version of the Unichip - but their knowledge level about engine management in general and piggybacks in particular didn't match their enthusiasm.
