I always thought a low hood sloping up and back towards the driver was supposed to be the proper design for pedestrian protection. Something about half-dead bodies being able to roll off . . . . For example, every Honda except my square-as-a-house Fit used to have a sloping hood with, by the way, a lovely view of the road.
