Apple also maintains strict control of their hardware and the software in their app store, so you're a LOT less likely to run into a problem. If it runs on an iphone, it runs the same on all iphones.
Google has no control over the hardware and pretty much any idiot can put an app up in their store. That app may run fine on the developer's phone or emulator or whatever he used to test it, but there's no guarantee it's going to be glitch-free on every android device.
Personally, I don't need much more of a phone than its stock abilities, and I do see quite a bit of value in having the apps I may need tested and known to work before installing them (or worse - paying for a garbage app).
Of course, there is still an awful lot of brand premium built into apple's pricing.
